History of Hôtel Le Cercle

After welcoming officers of the French Navy for decades, a hotel opened in 2017 within the Cercle Naval de Cherbourg. The property covers 3,800 m² across several buildings and features 52 rooms and suites, as well as 4 reception rooms and work lounges.

As soon as you step through the hotel doors, you are immersed in its history—that of the French Navy. Built in 1945, the Cercle Naval hosted officers for nearly 60 years.

Beyond the main part of the hotel, the property also includes two historic buildings. One was Hôtel Vautier at number 18, built in 1885; the other, Hôtel Ducrest de Villeneuve at number 20, dates back to the Second Empire. These two buildings, deeply rooted in the heritage of Cherbourg, have preserved original decorative features from the period (fireplaces, moldings, wall paneling, entrance door, etc.).

The hotel is located on the iconic square of Cherbourg, just steps away from the statue of Napoleon, the Town Hall and the Sainte-Trinité Basilica. In the distance, you can admire the former Transatlantic Maritime Station, now known as the Cité de la Mer.
